A taxi driver was robbed by two passengers at gunpoint last Friday (31 May). One of the suspects was pointed out to Strand police and arrested following the incident. Authorities also seized an imitation pistol stashed in an open field near Morkel’s Cottage informal settlement in Strand.
According to a police report, the victim had picked the passengers up around 13:15; one sat beside him and the other right behind him. No other passengers were in the taxi. “The suspect behind him cocked a firearm and ordered him to stop,” stated the report. “The suspects robbed him of cash and his cellphone at gunpoint, and fled on foot. No shots were fired. No injuries were sustained.”
After reporting the incident the victim took a drive with police, who spotted one of the suspected armed robbers. The suspect was arrested and a black imitation firearm was found. He was charged with robbery.
