Tragedy struck a Somerset West family who faces the aftermath of a raging fire which left their heritage rich house on mission grounds in Church Street gutted and patriarch hospitalised with burn wounds.
The legacy of a Christian home where generations were reared, shared in joyous occasions and memories made with loved ones including those passed, now in ruins. While our hearts go out to the fire victims, who now have to muster up the courage and energy to rebuild their lives, there is both a silver lining and lesson learnt – the break in the clouds being the unsung heroes who, when called to action, risk their lives in brave attempts to save others.
Two firefighters, aided by their crew, resulted in the near-impossible rescue of the pensioner who was trapped inside the burning house. It is comforting to know that we can depend on these everyday heroes without capes and masks to come to our aid in emergencies.
However, our firefighting resources are stretched thin and locals have a role to play by acting responsibly and prioritising safety, especially with rolling blackouts ever increasing and candles and lamps more common. Most importantly, be vigilant.
