It was a weekend of high drama and tight finishes for Somerset West Cricket Club (SWCC), as they secured a gritty victory against UCT on Saturday 14 March before falling just short in thriller against Varsity College on Sunday 15 March.

On Saturday, SWCC displayed remarkable composure to clinch a three-wicket victory over UCT in a First Division B clash.

After winning the toss and electing to field, SWCC’s attack applied constant pressure. Cameron Hewson led the charge with a clinical 3/43, well-supported by Paul Steyn (2/25) and Jason Lee Josephs (2/29).

UCT struggled to find momentum, eventually being bundled out for 182 runs in the 48th over.

The chase was far from straightforward. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, the SWCC middle order showed great grit. Juan Viljoen (38) and Larry Morkel (33) anchored the innings, allowing Scott Innes (32) to help guide the team home.

SWCC reached 183/7 in the 47th over, securing a hard-fought win.

The momentum from Saturday couldn’t quite carry SWCC through Sunday’s clash against Varsity College, as they suffered a four-wicket defeat in a game that went down to the wire.

Batting first, SWCC posted a competitive 211/10. Henco Stofberg was the mainstay of the innings, striking a solid 51 off 60 balls, while George Hlazo contributed a vital 41.

However, VCs bowlers proved difficult to score freely against, ensuring SWCC didn’t post an imposing total.

VC’s response was headlined by two standout unbeaten performances. Umary Davids (59*) and Imran Abdul (50*) put on a masterclass in composed chasing.

Despite the best efforts of the SWCC bowler Dylan van Schalkwyk, who claimed 3/41, VC reached 213/6 with just two overs to spare.

SWCC will play their final match of the season this Saturday when they travel to face UCT.
