It was a case of another weekend, another win for the first team of Somerset West Cricket Club (SWCC) when they travelled to Bellville South for a First Division C fixture on Saturday (12 February).

Fresh off a victory against Mitchells Plain CC the weekend before, the SWCC charges looked to continue their winning ways against the home side. Captain Jan Rademan won the toss and elected to bat, although runs were difficult to come by as the Bellville South bowlers bowled good areas and used the pitch conditions to their advantage.

Somerset West lost their first wicket with the score on 30, which brought Rademan (35) and Dieter Kotze (68) together. They pair were in good knick and delivered a 94-run partnership before the Kotze was caught at cover.

A mini collapse followed for the visitors, but Hein Claasen finished off the innings with a cameo innings of 21* from just 16 balls, to take SWCC to a competitive score of 207/9 after 50 overs.

Bellville South got off to a quick start in the first five overs of their innings, forcing the SW skipper to make bowling changes earlier than expected. This, however, proved a good move as it immediately changed the visitors’ fortunes.

Wiehand Meyer (4/23) and Gouws Koen (4/14) bowled well in tandem to destroy the home side’s batting line-up, and lead their team to massive 110-run victory.

This coming weekend, the SWCC troops will look to further extent their title chase when they take on Macassar CC in a derby match at Radloff Park on Saturday (19 February).
