The first team of Somerset West Cricket Club (SWCC) continued in their winning form when they completely thrashed Mitchells Plain CC (MPCC) in a league outing at Radloff Park on Saturday 5 February.
The local lads’ all-round performance led to a 10-wicket, bonus-point victory, pushing them further ahead in the race for ultimate league glory. The Somerset West charges have lost only one match this season, keeping in contention for Division 1C.
On Saturday, SWCC captain Jan Rademan won the toss and sent the visitors in to bat in hot conditions.
The Mitchells Plain batsmen got off to a slow start, which laid the platform for the innings as they struggled to get going. After 10 overs the visitors were battling on 8/2.
Piling on the pressure, the Somerset West bowlers dominated the innings as the visitors never offered any resistance as they were all bowled out for a measly 70 runs.
Chief destroyer Frans Geldenhuys bowled well throughout his 10 overs, picking up 5/9 and recording eight maidens.
He was well supported by Gouws Koen (3/16 in eight overs) and Eugene Geldenhuys (2/13 in 3,1 overs).
In their innings Somerset West made a tactical decision with the aim to thrash the target rapidly. Against the norm Rademan opened the batting with regular opener Wiehann Meyer, in the hopes that the team’s net run rate would increase. The decision paid off as Meyer (45*) was in a destructive mood along with Rademan (23*) as they made quick work of the target and notched up 75/0 in just 5,2 overs.
- In doing so, the pair led their team to a memorable 10-wicket victory.
