) Suspects caught with drugs
Several police operations conducted over the weekend led to the arrest of seven suspects in possession of drugs in Somerset West.

Police acted on a tip-off of a drug exchange in Heldervue at 19:30 last Friday (21 January). The vehicle, a white Ford Figo, was spotted in Primula Street with two occupants. On investigation, cocaine and ecstasy were found in the vehicle and confiscated. Both suspects, aged 26 and 32, were arrested and detained at the Somerset West Police Station.

In a separate incident, on Saturday (22 January), police responded to information of a drug shipment being dropped off at a shopping centre at 13:30. “The area was monitored and a vehicle, a white Toyota Yaris, was spotted fitting the description,” a report reads. “A 42-year-old man was in the vehicle, which was pulled over and searched. A black shopping bag containing drugs such as ecstasy tablets, dagga and cocaine was confiscated.”

The suspect was arrested.

All suspects were expected to appear in the Somerset West Magistrates’ Court on drug-related charges.) Robber arrested

A 21-year-old man from Nomzamo is expected to appear in the Somerset West Magistrates’ Court on a charge of robbery with a weapon other than a firearm following an incident last Friday (21 January).

The complainant was walking in Main Road talking on her cellphone when two suspects walked up to her, one proceeding to threaten her with a knife, and robbed her of her cellphone. A bystander come to her aid and one of the suspects was caught. The suspect was handed over to police. The other suspect manage to ran away.

Somerset West police spokesperson Sgt Suzan Jantjies said the incident happened just after 08:00.

“According to the complainant she was on duty when a man entered the store, showed her to the cash register and demanded money,” she said.

“On learning the cash register was empty he escorted her to a back office where another firearm wielding robber was banging on the door. The suspects successfully gained access to the office and fled through the store entrance with cellphones, cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of cash as loot.”

Jantjies further said it is believed three suspects were involved in the business robbery. Anyone with information is requested to contact Detective WO Nolan Fischer on 021 850 1344.
