In a thrilling encounter at Helderzicht Sports Grounds All Saints RFC showcased their resilience and determination, staging a remarkable second-half comeback to secure a nail-biting 14-13 victory over local rivals, Strand RC.
The Helderberg-based Western Province Super League B derby on Saturday 22 July attracted hordes of enthusiastic and loyal club rugby supporters, eager to witness the fierce battle between these two formidable teams.
Despite heading into the match as the underdogs, Strand RC displayed immense tenacity from the kick-off. It was the visiting side, Strand RC, who struck first, gaining an early advantage, and setting a commanding 13-0 lead by half-time. Ronan Daniels delivered a moment of brilliance with a solo try for Strand, while the young and talented flyhalf, Nathan Fransman, successfully converted the try and added six points through well-executed penalty attempts.
With the pressure on and trailing by a significant margin at the break, the home side rallied together, determined to turn the tide in their favour. A stern half-time talk seemed to ignite their fighting spirit as they returned to the field with renewed vigour.
The second half showcased a dominant display from All Saints as they mounted an impressive comeback. A pivotal moment came when veteran scrumhalf, Junaid Sylvester, showcased remarkable spatial awareness and speed to score a sensational try under the uprights. The try was successfully converted, propelling All Saints into the lead for the first and only time in the match.
Gavin Stopforth’s earlier try, combined with fullback Dylan Scholtz’s accurate kicking, saw both of All Saints’ tries converted, adding crucial points to their tally. With the momentum firmly on their side, All Saints RFC valiantly held off Strand’s fierce attacks, ensuring their defence remained resolute until the final whistle.
In a tense climax, Strand was awarded an injury time penalty conversion attempt, which could have snatched the victory from All Saints’ grasp. However, the resolute defence of All Saints held firm, and the crucial penalty attempt narrowly missed its mark.
The final score of 14-13 marked a momentous win for All Saints, who solidified their position at the top of the Super B log. On the other hand, Strand RC, despite the narrow loss, showcased their formidable skill and spirit and remain firmly placed within the top six of the league table.
