Four Somerset West Primary School learners showed their mettle by bagging numerous medals at the Western Province Primary Schools Athletics meeting last Thursday (3 March).

These Summie athletes were selected to represent the Metro East District team at the WP Championships and sterling performances not only resulted in the participants clinching a total of eight medals, but securing their spot on the Western Province Primary Schools team to participate at the Western Cape Championships this Saturday (12 March).

They are Canaan Eksteen (gold medal for 100 m, 200 m and relay boys u-13), Solomon Nyashanu (bronze medal for boys u-11 long jump), Oratile Manganeng (silver medal for girls u-10 70 m hurdles and Taygen Koopman (gold medal for 100 m, and silver medals and gold medal for relay girls u-13 100 m).

Eksteen and Koopman were the u-13 stars of the champs and achieved a rare achievement when they won the boys and girls 100 m races, earning them the title of the fastest boy and girl for 2022 to come from the same school.

Eksteen added another gold medal in the individual 200 m, and Koopman a silver medal in the 200 m.

Both Eksteen and Koopman performed very well this season, winning several medals and awards. Eksteen won Victor Ludorum awards at the school’s interhouse athletics at the beginning of the year, as well as during the 2022 Buco Primary Schools’ Athletics Interschools.

Koopman added the colour sports Victrix Ludorum award to her achievements so far this year.

All athletes are very positive that they will do well at the Western Cape Champs and have their sights on a place in the team for the SA Primary School Championship.
