After securing promotion to Super League C last week, Strand United conquered one more hurdle when they faced Whistling Wheels in Eerste River on Saturday (23 September) to be crowned Top 9 Champions.
The visitors started like a house on fire as they simply dominated all facets of play and deservedly took the lead with a converted try by flank Angelo Adams.
Playing with a strong wind behind their backs, the hosts slowly clawed their way back into the match and hit back on the counter attack to level the score (7-7).
United however tightened their grip on the match as attack after attack saw the Strand side’s forwards and backs involved in a try scored by Yusuf Arnold, as a grubber gathered by wing Shadley Bonza saw him make an unconventional overhead pass for the try assist. A penalty by Whistling Wheels saw the teams go into the break with a 12-10 scoreline.
After the break it virtually became the Ebrahim Pedro show as the scrumhalf moved to flyhalf. He ran the Whistling Wheels’ defence ragged, scoring two tries and slotting three conversions and two beautiful drop-goals to take the score to 35-10.
United secured the bonus-point win to be crowned champions of the league.
Meanwhile, the club’s second and third teams achieved similar success as they too were crowned league champions in their respective divisions.
