Strand United delivered a powerful performance to claim a 15-12 victory over top-ranked Kraaifontein RFC in a Super League C encounter at Abattoir Sports Ground on Saturday (25 June).

The home side, playing with tremendous energy considering they have not been at the end of good results lately, produced a top-class defensive display as they capitalised on a host of mistakes by the visitors. They scrambled superbly in defence, while a full-strength Kraaifontein side lacked the composure shown in their recent outings and looked rattled throughout the game.

United showed dogged character from the outset as they looked dominant throughout the 80 minutes. Their loose trio, comprising influential eighthman Rasool Thomas and flankers Angelo Adams and Zayn Essa, were sublime on the day. Strikingly, livewire Adams completely outshined the visitors’ energetic Ruan Vermaak.

While the United boys struggled in the set-plays, they gave Kraaie a working over at the breakdown and the visitors were penalised in that area, which allowed the home side to crossover for the first score through Abduraghmaan Darries to close off the first half with the score on 5-0.

United retook their inspired play right after the start of the second half, minutes after the visitors failed to capitalise on a series of point-scoring opportunities. The ball bounced into Thomas’ hands and the strongman bulldozed through the Kraaie defenders, where after quick recycling found Luidwie Ruiters, who went over to score a fine try (10-0).

Abduraghmaan Darries added the conversion (12-0) and United continued to separate themselves from their error-strewn opponents, who were awarded a penalty try (12-7). The sharpshooter flyhalf kicked a penalty to put the score beyond the visitors’ reach (15-7).

There was some cheer for the flat footed Kraaie as full-back Darren Abrahams scored a late unconverted try (15-12), but Adams provided the fairytale ending for United with an unmatched work rate and sheer tenacity.

While United have clawed their away out of the bottom of the log with this victory, they look like a team with newfound energy they will push for a top six position. Kraaifontein are now in fifth place on the log with 27 points, locked in a dire struggle with Kylemore (30), and Rangers (27) for progression to the play-offs.
