The local club rugby landscape is bracing for one of its most fiercely contested rivalries, with all eyes turning to the upcoming Super League C battle between Strand RFC and Strand United on Saturday 11 July.
While championship titles are being chased elsewhere, this weekend’s local derby is purely about survival, local bragging rights and desperate redemption.
Both sides head into the derby licking their wounds after tough outings at the weekend (Saturday 4 July). United’s difficult season continued with a heavy 43-5 defeat at the hands of Langa, leaving them rooted to 15th place on the SLC table with just five points from 11 games.

Liga fared slightly better in a high-scoring affair, but ultimately fell 47-29 to Pniël Villagers, leaving them in 14th place with 19 points. With both teams precariously placed in the SLC relegation zone, the upcoming clash is a must-win fixture.
The tension of an upcoming derby matches the electric atmosphere witnessed at Riverside Park at the weekend. In a massive Super League B clash, league leaders Macassar RFC delivered a statement performance, dispatching neighbours All Saints RFC 26-13 in front of a packed and vocal crowd.

Supporters descended on the grounds as early as 06:00 to witness the first vs second blockbuster. Macassar seized control immediately, anchored by a monstrous performance from tighthead prop and eventual man-of-the-match Nangamso Bukani, who dismantled the All Saints scrum.
Winger Kyle Cookson opened the scoring just two minutes in, capitalising on a penalty from Garth de Bruin. Skipper Jovan Cookson sniped over from a ruck shortly after, and a dominant penalty try pushed the MC Boys’ half-time lead to 21-3.

Lethan Rhodes scored immediately after the break to make it 26-3. Though the Olla Boys fought back with tries by Jeraldo Jacobs and Lee-Mondre Benjamin, the hosts comfortably managed the game to secure the victory.
The result keeps the MC Boys firmly at the summit of the SLB standings with 44 points, while All Saints drop to third place on 37 points ahead of their away fixture against Hands & Heart.
In Super League A, Helderberg Rugby Club turned Charles Morkel Stadium into a festival of running rugby with an astronomical 150-5 demolition of hapless Van der Stel-Evergreens.

Berge crossed the whitewash an unbelievable 22 times in a complete team performance. Place kicker Michael Visser was lethal, slotting 13 conversions, while Darren Hendricks and Junior For-
tuin added another six between them.
The emphatic victory keeps Helderberg comfortably in second place in the SLA standings with 43 points, trailing only Villager. The club now heads into a timely bye week to recover before hosting Kuils River on Saturday 18 July.

Across the rest of the leagues, local clubs experienced a highly volatile weekend.
In SLB St George’s played to a thrilling, high-octane 32-32 draw with Vineyards, which leaves them in 13th place with 19 points as they prepare for a tough away match against Belhar.
Raithby Universals showed incredible grit to hold second-placed Watsonia Warriors to a 17-17 stalemate in SLC. RU is placed 10th with 25 points and will look to build on that momentum this weekend.
In the Northern League, Faure RFC got a maximum five points after Stellenbosch-Coronations forfeited their scheduled match, resulting in a 28-0 scoreline.
Gordon’s Bay Pioneers suffered a tough defensive outing, conceding a 55-33 defeat to Blakes.

Fixtures for 11 July:
– SLB: Belhar vs St George’s, Hands & Heart vs All Saints;
– SLC: Strand RFC vs Strand United, Sir Lowrians vs Gardens;
– Northern: Excelsior vs Faure, Stellenbosch-Coronations vs Gordon’s Bay Pioneers.
