Strand Athletics Club celebrated their runners participating in the Comrades Marathon Up Run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg on Sunday 9 June.
The club especially acknowledged Steven George on his first Comrades and silver medal, as well as Angelique Smit who obtained her green number for completing 10 Comrades.
The pair were among a group of about 38 runners representing Strand Athletics Club at the marathon.
It was a special milestone for 29-year-old George, who joined the club about three years ago.
He said he trained hard ahead of the event and the toughest part was keeping a steady pace to endure the length of the 85,91 km race.
George added it felt “amazing” to complete it in such a good time and that he felt strong throughout despite the odd little cramp here and there. He has now set his sights on the Cape Town Marathon in October.
The club has become the largest running club in the Helderberg, with almost 300 members of all ages and abilities.
It organises a variety of running activities, such as road races, cross country, trail running and social runs. The club also organises its own races, such as the Falsebay 50, which attracts runners countrywide.
Strand Athletics Club is affiliated to Western Province Athletics and Athletics South Africa. “The club has a strong community spirit,” it said in a statement. “It welcomes new members and visitors, and strives to create a friendly and supportive environment for everyone who loves running.”
