For the past 10 months the Strand Indoor Swimming Pool has been closed for renovations and repairs, but despite scheduled opening dates the doors to the municipal facility remain shut.

According to local Strand resident and avid pool user Denise Letts, groups of concerned residents have been in regular correspondence with relevant City of Cape Town departments to understand the reasons behind the delays and push for action. “Despite our persistent efforts, we are left with little clarity and no progress,” she said.

Letts also provided correspondence with City officials that highlights a pattern of deflection and inaction.

The initial optimism surrounding the facility’s imminent reopening quickly evaporated.

“At first we were told everything was complete except for electrical work, then it was the tiled pool getting epoxied,” Letts recalled.

“We are constantly getting a different story.”

This constant shifting of timelines has eroded trust and left residents feeling increasingly frustrated and unheard. They feel their concerns are being dismissed, their patience tested and their recreational needs ignored.

Residents were apparently informed that the facility was ready for reopening three months ago, but “red tape” delayed it.

“This was a two-month scheduled shutdown that began in March 2024, but now it’s been 10 months with no swimming pool and still no guaranteed opening date.”

The impact of the prolonged closure extends beyond mere inconvenience.

The swimming facility has played a vital role in the community, providing a space for recreational swimming, aquatic fitness classes and social interaction.

Its absence left a void in the lives of many residents, particularly children, seniors and those with limited mobility.

When approached for comment, Patricia van der Ross, Mayoral Committee member for Community Services and Health, could not provide an exact date of reopening. She instead said the reopening is planned for mid-January. DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette previously reported on the announced date as the end of December 2024 (“Pool opening delayed”, 18 December 2024).

Elaborating on the delay and giving insight into the status of repairs, Van der Ross admitted the project had experienced some setbacks with wall-tile work and problematic sections of the pool basin, which the vendor is currently finalising.

“While mechanical and civil works were completed by the end of December, necessary electrical work will begin in early January after the builders’ holiday,” she said.

“The facility has undergone a significant revamp, including extensive pool and structural improvements and will require proper setting up, cleaning and testing before reopening. Additional upgrades, such as heating units and air ventilation, will continue through early 2025 without affecting operations, except for a brief closure in May for system testing

“We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding as we work to ensure these swimming pool facilities meet all operational and safety standards. For more information on specific pools and their operating hours, please visit the City’s website or contact your nearest community facility.”
