Susan Botha of Somerset West clinched gold at the Abu Dhabi Jiujitsu Pro (AJP) Tour in Johannesburg on Saturday 11 February. The 37-year-old is now the number one-ranked amateur white belt women’s 70 kg fighter in the country. What makes the achievement even more remarkable is that this was only the second competition in which she participated, having only competed in the AJP Cape Town Tour last year. “I was so surprised, as I wasn’t expecting to do so well. I had a game plan and just stuck to it, which is what may have made the difference,” an elated Botha said. The software product owner is a student at Apex Jiu Jitsu in Somerset West and is already preparing for her next competition, the Abu Dhabi Combat Club Tournament, scheduled for later this year.
