A wonderful Mandela Day initiative was started in 2019 by Helderberg Hospice, where beautiful handmade blankets received from the warm-hearted Helderberg community were distributed to patients in Macassar. This was led by a patient-support group in the area, The Lilies. The patients were very excited at receiving the gift of these blankets, perfectly timed for the cold winter months. This inspired the caring members of The Lilies group to make this an annual Mandela Day community outreach. This year, instead of waiting for blankets to be donated, the support group together with enrolled nursing assistant Emma van der Merwe joined forces in using donated wool to start knitting and crocheting, creating beautiful blankets themselves to share with patients. In the time it took them to make these blankets some of The Lilies support group members had themselves become patients. Pictured with the lovely blankets in the photo above are Johanna Basson, Gordon Mowers, Ida Presents, Chrissie Mowers and Nettie Hutton. Right: Bettie Daniels and Ida Presents.
