Top-ranked Boland golfer Megan Streicher of Somerset West made her debut for South Africa in Abu Dhabi at the World Amateur Team Championships (WATC), which took place from Wednesday 25 to Saturday 28 October.
She was selected following a breakout first year competing for the University of North Carolina, USA, where she is on a golfing scholarship.
In 2019, Streicher was the winner of DistrictMail/Supersport Let’s Play Sport Star of the year on the local front.
Streicher competed alongside Caitlyn Macnab and Kajal Mistry, who both returned for duty for South Africa for a third successive time. She came 81st in the Abu Dhabi WATC after starting with rounds of 76 and 73. The Boland star then shot an 80 in the third round, but came back to shoot a 72 on the final day. The Republic of Korea won the Espirito Santo Trophy, while the SA Protea women’s team came 27th overall. The men’s and women’s championships take place in consecutive weeks. On each day, the best two of the three scores count for the team trophy. The Eisenhower Trophy was won by the American men’s team.
This World Amateur Team Golf Championship takes place biannually and the next host country is Singapore in 2025. The South African team comprised Val Holland (Golfrsa Women’s Coach), Macnab, Mistry, Streicher and Anna Becker-Frankel (Golfrsa assistant coach).
