Top achievers Manu Huyssen, left (nine distinctions) and Shannon Gerbers (eight).

Somerset College had a 100% pass rate in the 2015 Independent Examinations Board (IEB) Matric examinations, with 346 distinctions obtained and 99% of its candidates achieving entry requirements to Bachelor Degree (BD) studies.

Meg Fargher, executive head of Somerset College, is delighted with the matric results, particularly that students achieved subject averages above the IEB national average and across a broad range of subjects. Twenty-five percent of the class achieved six or more distinctions – an outstanding achievement.

The school’s top achiever, Manu Huyssen, obtained nine distinctions in English, Afrikaans, French, German, Life Orientation, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Advanced Programme Mathematics. Manu was also acknowledged by the IEB for Commendable Achievement (candidate ranked in the top 5% of learners in five or more subjects and scored 80% or more for Life Orientation).

Twelve students were acknowledged for being placed in the top 1% in their subject in the country. They are Elizabeth Corner, Brandon Christie, Joshua Smit, Daniela Diekmann, Jenna Franckeiss, Ambar van der Wath, Danielle Kruger, Mark Reuter, Sean Richardson, Sophie Gebers, Nicholas Trafford and Manu Huyssen. Elizabeth Corner obtained eight distinctions, and Shannon Gebers, Rory Lennon, James Poole, Mark Reuter, Sean Richardson and Ambar van der Wath obtained seven distinctions each.

This year, in addition to the IEB, Somerset College has introduced the Cambridge programme. This allows students to complete their A-levels through a two-year staged route consisting of AS-levels in the first year and A-levels in the second, with examinations written in November of each year.
