Distance for Difference (D4D) has officially launched THE500, its fundraiser for 2023 comprising a 24-hour cycling and spinning challenge that takes place this year at Virgin Active Waterstone in Somerset West on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 October.

D4D’s journey started on 26 December 2004 and, since 2013, when the first THE500 was held it quickly became a very special event.

According to D4D founder Stephan Pieterse, over the last five THE500s (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021) they have experienced wonderful, inspiring, hard working and self-sacrificing people and businesses come together to give freely of their time, talents and energy to plan and execute an amazing event.

“We have been blessed with so many memorable moments over the years,” he said, adding that there was excitement about the continuation of their long-standing partnership with Virgin Active.

“We are so thankful for all the amazing people at Virgin Active who has helped us to make this possible!

“Please know this. It’s people like you who make a difference THE500 is not about the individual, the prestige of completing a challenge, personal gain, a medal or admiration from others, but rather about giving of yourself, the resources you have been blessed with or simply your support.

“It is about the collective effort of a community that will result in a lasting impact on the lives of many vulnerable children in desperate need of loving care, parental guidance, a good education, physical protection or simply one nourishing meal a day.”
