Helderberg High School and the Silverleaf Seventh-day Adventist Church undertook a mission trip to Progress in Upington from 14 to 23 June, with the focus mostly on reaching out to primary school age children, but also not excluding the older ones.

“As a Christian organisation we have heard and responded to the call of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, given in Matthew 28, verses 19-20, and we have reached out to those in Northern Cape with the assurance that Jesus is with us always, even unto the end of the world,” says Pastor Ezra Sauls of the Silverleaf SDA Church.

As it was school holidays the response from the community and the children was wonderful.

“On the first day of our programme we had 205 children at the Franciscus Primary School ranging from ages four to 17.”

The team worked with the children from 10:00 to 13:00 and, together with Meals on Wheels Progress, they provided 798 meals for the children during the week. They gave each child a certificate, handing out 420 certificates in total.

“We challenged the young people of Progress to be role models in the community and we had some help from the older children in making our work a success.”

Different outreach programmes were run each afternoon. The learners from the Helderberg also visited the local police station and prayed, made music and sang for the officers on duty.
