In an uplifting tale of hope and the value of education, a Macassar school long deprived of a vital learning resource is set to embark on a new chapter.
After years of anticipation, False Bay Primary School is thrilled to announce the grand opening of its long-awaited school library, which will take place at 15:00 on Saturday 17 August.
To add an even more magical touch to this momentous occasion, acclaimed Strand author Judith Vollmer, who also happens to be the school’s new librarian, will grace the event by launching her highly anticipated 16th book, Kyla se winterkersfees in Londen.
Situated in the heart of Macassar, a community grappling with socio-economic challenges, the school library is poised to become a beacon of knowledge and inspiration, said principal Desmond Engelbrecht who, since 2019, has steered the school towards growth and academic success.
In January the school moved into its brand-new building, and can finally accommodate a fully-fledged library thanks to sponsors Panorama Primary in Plattekloof, Imibala Trust as well as many private individuals.
“For countless learners this space will offer a much-needed sanctuary for learning, research and the sheer joy of reading,” said Engelbrecht.
“The library, a dream nurtured by teachers, parents and community members, has finally materialised thanks to the generous support of our donors.”
He noted with concern that recent statistics showed 81% of Grade 4 learners in the country read without comprehension.
“Readers are leaders. If we can instil a sense of reading among our learners then I am confident we will nurture generations of successful communities. We’ve already started a reading club, and it’s doing very well so far, sparking interest and inculcating a sense of understanding among our Grade 7s.”
The grand opening promises to be a day filled with excitement and celebration. Learners, teachers, parents and community members will gather to witness the ceremony, followed by a series of engaging activities, including book readings and storytelling sessions.
To her role as newly-appointed school librarian Vollmer brings a wealth of experience and passion for storytelling to the role. Her appointment is seen as a transformative moment for the school, as it promises to ignite a love for reading among the learners.
Thrilled to have the grand opening serve as a platform for the launch of her latest literary offering, Vollmer said she is very satisfied with her latest book and excited about taking on the role of school librarian.
“It’s a privilege to be given the opportunity to motivate and encourage learners to take full advantage of reading and use it as a means to become intelligent leaders in society. Libraries are crucial in shaping young minds, and this is a momentous occasion not just for the school, but also for the community.”
For the community itself, in the run-up to the grand opening there was a palpable sense of optimism and anticipation.
“The school library is more than just a building,” Engelbrecht declared. “It is a symbol of hope, a catalyst for change and a testament to the power of education to transform lives.”
