The City of Cape Town is urging residents to cut non-essential water use after daily consumption exceeded the 975 million litre target, reaching 1โ€‰025 million litres amid dam levels sitting 19,7% lower than last year. The City of Cape Town has set a collective target of less than 975 million litres per day (MLD) for the summer season. However, as of Wednesday 31 December 2025, average usage stands at 1โ€‰025 MLD โ€“ significantly above target. Dam levels currently sit at 66,8%, but are 19,7% lower than the same time last year.

Climate change is making Western Cape rainfall increasingly unpredictable, with longer dry periods and more intense but less frequent rainfall. This creates greater risk of extended dry spells and increased water demand during the hotter summer months.

“While there is no immediate cause for concern, all Capetonians, visitors and businesses must carefully manage their water use over the coming months,” said Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee member for Water and Sanitation.

Essential water-saving tips:

โ€ข Shower smart: Take short, stop-start showers or small baths.

โ€ข Wash efficiently: Only run full loads for laundry and dishwashers.

โ€ข Garden wisely: Water only before 09:00 or after 18:00.

โ€ข Cover pools: Prevent up to 95% evaporation losses.

โ€ข Fix leaks: Turn off taps and repair dripping faucets immediately.

Through the City’s New Water Programme, Cape Town is securing alternative water sources including desalination and groundwater. However, these projects take time to implement.

“Saving water now is how we protect our city tomorrow,” the City emphasised.

Early water conservation helps prevent sudden restrictions and ensures adequate reserves if 2026 rainfall falls below average.
