Rania Hendricks is baking goods that are set to make the Helderberg’s collective sweet tooth buzz with saccharine delight, enough to put smiles on everybody’s faces.
The 23-year-old is the owner of Purrrfectly Baked, which sells all sorts of delicious baked goods such as fancies, cupcakes as well as custom cakes from her home in First Street, Strand.
The budding entrepreneur started her business last year and, even though it has been a slow process, she is now making waves as word of her sweet treats has spread.
“It can be overwhelming, but I’m very grateful for the growth of my business,” said Hendricks
Baking started as a way to bond with her family, but it was at Parel Vallei High School, in consumer studies classes, that she fell in love with crafting sweet treats.
It was here that her baking skills were first spotted, and she was asked by a family friend to bake a birthday cake, her first foray into baking as a service.
“It was really nerve-racking to bake for someone outside the family. I made the cake three times before she came to collect it.”
Such were the cautious beginnings of Hendricks’ career as an entrepreneur. She explained she is not a very outspoken person, but uses her baking as a way to express herself creatively.
It took her a while to get comfortable using her talent to generate money as she was often crippled her drive for perfectionism.
A year into her journey she is becoming more confident with her baking and, more importantly, within herself. This has allowed her to master her craft and explore more intimate moments with her clients.
“That’s what I love about baking; I get to be part of so many milestones in people’s lives,” Hendricks related.
