Despite the stormy weather during the night, the skies cleared up from about 07:00 on Saturday (18 June) at the Helderberg Harriers’ Timbuild Spookhill Challenge in Somerset West. Organisers hailed it as a “fantastic” race with no wind and just a slight drizzle around 09:00 to cool down the runners as they tackled the big hill. The weather stayed at bay during the prize-giving, with the clouds gathering for more rainfall after the event. Fewer people than expected entered, with around 650 finishers, but the winners smiled all the way to the finish line. The atmosphere was one of excitement, being back on the road after two years of running. Even a traffic officer, Franky Adams, got caught up in the excitement and jumped out of his car to run the last few kilometres. Event sponsor TimBuild sponsored many lucky-draw prizes, as well as the prize money for the race winners. Queen of the Hill, Anel Terblanche, finished the race in a time of 59:02.
The top three men’s finishers (from left) are Philani Sengce (second), Gilbert Mutandiro (third) and Deon-Lee Hendricks (first).
At least 650 runners participated in the much-anticipated TimBuild Spookhill Challenge at the weekend, which made a return after two years.
