Strand Rotary Club hosted a Christmas in July event at the Gordon’s Bay Yacht Club on the evening of Saturday 30 July, when incoming president Eleanore Baiocchi was officially inducted.

In her acceptance speech, she pledged to work tirelessly on the various projects Rotary has instituted for the benefit of others, and assured the club was in a strong position with dedicated members all sharing the workload and vision.

She urged guests to support Rotary’s Junk Trunk project, an initiative started by the late Marion Hack in 1986 (a Rotary Ann and member of the Strand Rotary Club’s Rotary Ann’s as it was then known).

Junk trunk is a second-hand shop manned by Rotarians and volunteers. Any donated goods by the general public, which are salable, and in good working order of most types from households (clothing, utensils, crockery and other) are sold for funds, which are in turn used in the various community projects.

With a slogan of “your trash could be someone else’s treasure, they accept unwanted goods such as clothes, shoes, furniture and household goods.

Some of the beneficiaries of the project include Harris House, Sencit, Victim Support Zandvliet, Garden Village, Hopefield House, Imibali and Heartlands Baby Sanctuary.
