The Ons Plek centre in Strand worked in conjunction with members Helderberg Ocean Awareness Movement (HOAM), Kay’s Caravan Park and Strand Neighbourhood Watch to conduct a river clean-up at the section of the Lourens River behind Woltemade Street, Strand last Wednesday (16 August).

“The day was about teaching the children about the environment and encouraging a conservational approach to our surroundings, as well as the importance of keeping our plate clean,” said Joey Lotter, manager of Ons Plek.

“We came across a marsh terrapin (African helmeted turtle). In dry weather it buries itself until rains return; on the day it was out and about! It’s just amazing to see the wildlife next to the river and realise why it is so important to keep it clean.”

Lisa Starr of HOAM, who also gave a talk to the youths present on the significance of the environment, said a total of 21 bags of rubbish, amounting to 300 kg, were collected up.

“It was a lovely afternoon with a fun bunch. Even though the litter on the banks is vast, the biodiversity of this river is still very apparent,” she said.
