Young Bafana dominated the George Family Soccer Tournament, which was played at Lwandle Stadium over the past two weekends.

The event, hosted by local club Helderberg Rovers, was a huge success and was well supported by the local community.

Both the Young Bafana u-14 and u-16 teams clinched the win in their respective age groups. The u-14 team went through the tournament undefeated and were in fine form in the final, where they defeated Helderberg Rovers 5-0.

YB controlled the match from the start with their attractive brand of football, which resulted in striker Dean Scharrighuisen netting his first hat trick.

Coach Lio Rashaun was deservedly awarded the coach of the tournament trophy and Pelo Mswelanto won the goalkeeper of the tournament award. This u-14 team retained the George trophy.

The u-16 YB team also went through the tournament undefeated but were not as dominant as the u-14 team were in the final. They edged Helderberg Rovers in a fairly close final by 1-0, but were superior in terms of possession and territorial dominance.

YB were hampered to a degree by a depleted squad but still managed to walk away with the player of the tournament award, claimed by Siphomeze Sancuzi, goalkeeper of the tournament award by Asiphamandla Mchweba and Top Goalscorer award by Donay Poole.

“Young Bafana are proud of both the u-14 and u-16 teams and their coaches,” the club said in a statement. “They have been rewarded for putting in the hard work at training and both coaches are looking forward to a successful upcoming season in developing young players for the future.”
