Following recent operational disputes, taxi associations Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata) and the Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) signed a formal agreement to resolve conflicts affecting key routes including Mfuleni-Somerset yesterday (Tuesday 24 June).
According to a media statement released by the Santaco Western Cape, the agreement emerged from critical problem-solving engagements focused on ensuring commuter safety, operational clarity and industry stability. Both associations demonstrated their commitment to fostering a peaceful, safe and reliable public transportation system within the Western Cape, prioritising passenger welfare above all else.
“The industry sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused during this time. Santaco Western Cape emphasises that all parties are committed to staying proactive in addressing and resolving key issues collaboratively, working together to build a safer, more sustainable public transportation system for everyone,” the statement divulged.
The Western Cape government also welcomed the agreement between the taxi associations to resolve conflicts on the Mfuleni-Somerset and Khayelitsha-Somerset routes. “We commend all parties involved for prioritising commuter safety and for reaffirming their shared responsibility to uphold peace and order within the taxi industry. This agreement is a testament to what is possible when collective leadership and dialogue places the people of this province first,” said provincial mobility minister Isaac Sileku.
