The Grade 12 class of Reddam House Somerset are in the process of completing the final chapter of their IEB Afrikaans prescribed novel Asem by Jan Vermeulen. The book is a mesmerising coming-of-age novel that takes readers on a journey with the main character Barries as he embarks on the biggest journey of his life. It’s a poignant story about addiction, second chances and what it means to truly find yourself. Learner Annie Dillard believes we should “read books as one would breathe air, to fill up and live”. Asem, according to Afrikaans teacher Chantal Brand, is exactly this: “Breathtaking in every sense, as well as life-changing.”Foto:
