On Thursday 16 May Soapbox presented the Captain Fanplastic educational programme to Grade 5 learners of Somerset West Methodist Primary School.
Captain Fanplastic is an educational programme that seeks to fulfil goal number 14 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals – “Reduce pollution in our oceans”. Soapbox raises awareness of the impact plastic has on the environment, but also its value.
Every year billions of kilograms of plastic end up in the world’s oceans, and children, especially, must be educated about environmentally friendly lifestyles.
Captain Fanplastic is a four-part programme using graphic storytelling and creativity to educate primary school learners about plastic.
The learning objective is to create a mindset that sees plastic as treasure, not to be thrown away, but picked up for re-use or recycling.
The presenter of the Captain Fanplastic programme was Yanga Gceya.
