Firefighters of the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services were lauded by residents following their swift response to a shack fire which was extinguished before it could rip through the informal settlement in Sir Lowry’s Pass last Friday (7 January). According to spokesperson Jermaine Carelse they were called to the scene on the corners of Brinkhuis Street and Sir Lowry’s Pass Road at 08:45. Crews from Sir Lowry’s Pass, Strand and Somerset West were dispatched to the scene. “A single informal structure and its contents was completely destroyed in the fire. Seven persons were displaced and no injuries were reported,” said Carelse. “The fire, of which the cause is unknown, was extinguished at 09:29.” Resident Wilna Papier took to Facebook saying: “Sir Lowry’s Pass fire brigade, you are tops. Very quick response from the first call. Ek was nog besig om te vra vir ‘back up’ to ry hulle al verby my. Dankie julle.”
