From Tuesday 7 to Thursday 23 March, Clarence Drive (the R44) will undergo emergency slope-stabilisation repairs.

The scenic coastal route will be cordoned off between the Grille Shack restaurant and Steenbras Dam Mountain Pass for emergency slope-stabilisation repairs. During closures access to the pump diner will be possible only from the Rooi Els side.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes where possible.

The urgent works were triggered by heavy rains experienced on Sunday 11 and Monday 12 December last year. The project, which is being undertaken by Civils 2000 (Pty) Ltd, is scheduled for completion on Sunday 29 March.

From Monday to Friday it will be closed between 08:00 and 18:00. And between 18:00 and 08:00 it will be open with a stop-and-go system in place. On Saturday it will be closed between 08:00 and 15:00. It will be opened afterwards, from Saturday at 15:00 to Monday morning at 08:00, with a stop-and-go system in place.

Road users were requested to use alternative routes in this period, preferably via the N2. The safety and convenience of the travelling public is of utmost importance to the Western Cape Government, according to the Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers. Every effort was being made to minimise disruptions for visitors to and residents of the area.

“The condition of the road infrastructure has deteriorated as a result of severe rains,” he said. “Clarence Drive is a key contributor to our economy. So an emergency repairs intervention has had to be undertaken. This intervention is underpinned by The Western Cape Government’s ethos of delivering services with urgency.”
