The air at the Macassar Sports Ground was thick with anticipation this past Saturday (7 March), as Macassar Cricket Club (MCC) padded up for their final First Division D fixture of the season against Khayelitsha CC.

With a potential second consecutive promotion on the line, the home side delivered a clinical performance to secure a vital bonus-point victory.

After the visitors won the toss and opted to field, Macassar faced an early setback when opener David Sebastian was dismissed in the third over.

However, fellow opener Michael Valentine provided the necessary stability, anchoring the top order with a composed 29 runs.

The momentum shifted dramatically when captain Rowayne Sinden and pinch hitter Peter Samuels united at the crease.

The pair dismantled the Khayelitsha CC attack, scoring 41 and 39 respectively.

Their aggressive partnership propelled MCC to a formidable total of 194/10, setting the visitors a challenging target of 195 runs.

Khayelitsha’s chase got off to a disastrous start, stumbling to 15/3 by the fifth over as Macassar’s seamers found their rhythm early. While Onke Kholwana played a stellar lone hand with a gritty 60 runs and Anele Yam added 25 runs, the rest of the batters struggled to find answers for MCC’s disciplined attack.

The standout performer with the ball was Morten Jantjies, who finished with exceptional figures of 2/20. Khayelitsha were eventually bowled out in the 39th over, handing Macassar a comprehensive win.

With this victory, MCC comfortably holds second position on the log with 50 points. They are currently six points clear of the third-placed team, who only has one fixture remaining. Mathematically, it appears impossible for the chasing pack to bridge the gap, meaning Macassar will likely taste the sweetness of promotion for the second season running.

However, the club awaits the official league confirmation to begin their celebrations in earnest.

In First Division B, Somerset West CC (SWCC) slipped to a narrow 16-run defeat against Bishop Lavis CC on the road.

SWCC’s decision to field first paid early dividends as they restricted Bishop Lavis to 159/10 in 40.2 overs. Armand Swart led the attack with precision to finish with impressive figures of 3/38.

The run chase began with purpose as Lloyd Simpson looked in sublime touch, scoring a commanding 47 runs. Contributions by Wilhelm Esterhuizen (22) and Scott Innes (19) kept the scoreboard ticking, but the momentum shifted as the Bishop Lavis attack began to strike back.

Despite being well within striking distance, SWCC lost their final wickets in quick succession, eventually being bowled out for 143 in the 38th over.

In First Division C, a clinical batting display powered Vikings CC to a 54-run victory over Helderberg CC (HCC) at Helderzicht Sports Ground.

After winning the toss and electing to bat in the shortened match, Vikings took full advantage of the conditions to post a formidable 212/6 in their allotted 32 overs. The HCC bowlers worked hard to break partnerships, with Dexter Hindley (3/14) emerging as the standout performer.

In response, HCC’s chase was headlined by a magnificent solo effort from Tyron Abrahams, who anchored the innings with a gritty 86 off 94 balls, but the mounting required run-rate proved too much for the hosts.

HCC eventually finished their 32 overs on 158/6, falling 54 runs short of the target.
