The installation of bulk and internal civil services and electrification at the Macassar Housing Project has been initiated, paving the way for construction to commence.

The City of Cape Town recently noted various milestones being reached in their R2,8 billion medium-term human settlements delivery programme, which included breaking ground for the installation of bulk and internal civil services and electrification at the Macassar Housing Project. This paves the way for the construction of 2 469 homes to provide housing opportunities for beneficiaries in the Macassar community.

On completion, the project will total approximately R800 million. “This project is in an Eskom supply area where there is currently not sufficient bulk electricity supply,” stated a media release. “The City has so also made available R91m of grant funding for the commissioning of an electrical substation – that will in fact service the entire area.”

The project has previously been marred by delays that angered the beneficiaries of the project (“Yard dwellers angry over delay”, DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette, 1 February).

Ward 109 councillor Peter Helfrich said he was happy to see the project is moving forward as many residents have been waiting in anticipation for their homes for a long time.

“I want nothing more than to be able to provide our residents with their keys to their homes,” he said.

The City’s Acting Mayco Member for Human Settlements, James Vos, said: “Our vulnerable residents must have the chance to live in a dignified, sustainable and opportunity-rich environment. I am confident after having spent time with our project and leadership teams on the ground, we can reach new heights of delivery in Cape Town.”
