Schools have closed and to kick boredom to the curb a retired Somerset West teacher is hosting a winter holiday programme for intermediate phase learners next month.
The programme will be facilitated by Soraya Kippie, who has been a teacher for 43 years and boasts having taught abroad in Kuwait, and takes place at the Helderberg Nature Reserve from Saturday 11 to Monday 13 July. The programme will be held from 09:00 to 13:00 on the respective days and is offered for Grade 6 and 7 learners (12 and 13-year-olds) at a cost of R100 per participant.
The idea for the programme came up during the Covid-19 pandemic, when Kippie saw parents struggling with their children when it comes to discipline.
“This made me come up with the programme that will instil leadership skills and give these pupils the nudge that they need,” said Kippie.
The interactive programme, which encourages artistic abilities, will entail drumming, a treasure hunt, an escape room and special focus on self-empowerment.
“We want to focus on all the concepts of learning,” said Kippies. “We want to give these learners skills that will better their future.
“Learners will also have the opportunity to become one with nature and experience how vegetations at the reserve have adapted following the recent fire (“Raging wildfire contained,” DistrictMail &
“We will also focus on individual and group dynamics.”
Kippie further mentioned that the programme can also be adapted for school’s interested in entering their teachers or the elderly with a desire to attend.
“We have space daily for 30 participants. But, if we get extra schools in then we will make plan to accommodate everyone.
“We are ready, so if any school wants to send their learners for this programme or discuss dates for another time that will work better for them then they are welcome to give me a ring.”
