As the busy year winds down and locals look forward to spending quality time with loved ones, a Gordon’s Bay resident will be fuelling her passion with the perfect opportunity for families to let loose and have some fun while trying out something new that is guaranteed to improve overall health and well-being over the festive season.

Experienced archer Faheema Peer calls on eager individuals, local families, holidaymakers and colleagues looking for the perfect team-building or wellness activity to give archery a try.

The 44-year-old, who embodies the health benefits of the sport, offers introductory archery sessions suited for all ages and abilities at a farm located just off the N2 highway outside the seaside village.

“Come and just have some fun,” she urged. “Everyone, both young and old, is welcome.”

Many just see archery as basically loading an arrow onto a bow and shooting at a target, but for Peer this calculated sport is so much more.

She shared her offering of the sport was not only inspired by her love, but also the opportunity to learn and grow on many levels through participation.

In addition to an information poster that advertises the sport as the ideal activity to relieve stress, strengthen the body and sharpen the mind, improve focus and for pure enjoyment, she explained: “As you draw the bowstring and prepare to release the arrow, you feel the relief of all the built-up emotions and stress. And you instantly feel so much better.”

According to the keen archer, who has successfully participated in many competitions, the sport is considered an art of self-development and a must-try for those who love being outdoors while spending time with family or friends and interested in new experiences.

“Not only do you learn a new skill, but you empower yourself,” said Peer who, when engaging in the sport, not only releases her inner warrior but realises her own strength.

The qualified auricular acupuncture therapist, who specialises in the treatment of physical, emotional and mental conditions such as stress and anxiety, ADHD and PTSD, discovered her love for the sport years ago when she was presented with an opportunity to train for Olympic archery.

The professional, who operates from an office in Somerset West, jumped at the opportunity, but life has a way of putting such chances on hold.

Peer recently had the opportunity to practise traditional archery and fall in love with the sport all over again.

The avid archer, who benefits from regular coaching by a mentor, boasts having done exceptionally well as part of two women’s teams that participated in a competition held in Cape Town earlier this year.

“So much of learning and growth takes place when participating in the sport, and it allows one to connect with oneself. Everyone deserves this chance.”

As facilitator Peer dedicates herself to taking interested participants through the paces step by step.

While archery does not discriminate, interested participants signing up for the lessons must bear in mind they will be out in the sun on a farm and are required to wear comfortable clothing, closed shoes and a sun hat. Also, take along a bottle of water to keep hydrated.

“Just show up, with your bow if you have one. If not, one will be provided. Fun is the order of the day.”
