Protestors closed the SLP road through the village to demand restoration of power supply.

Several homes in Sir Lowry’s Pass Village, Firgrove, Sandvlei and Nomzamo left without electricity for up to eight days, following stormy weather which battered the Helderberg on Sunday 7 and Monday 8 April, could finally breathe a sigh of relief as the power supply was restored to these areas this week.

Residents of Sir Lowry’s Pass Village staged protests and blocked roads on Saturday and Sunday (13 and 14 April), demanding the Eskom-supplied area have its power supply restored.

For two days the protesters obstructed the three-way intersection at the railway line on the corner of Old Sir Lowry’s Road and Sir Lowry’s Pass Road, as well as the road that runs through the village.

Since the power outage last week, Eskom had stated that its technicians were attending to the faults, but stressed that several of faults had been reported across the province as a result of the storms, leaving a significant backlog for response teams. “Operators were hard at work to restore electricity to the remaining areas without electricity supply caused by inclement weather,” Eskom stated.

The parastatal later reported that it had repaired various network faults and restored supply to many of affected areas.

By Monday (15 April), the remaining areas were finally switched on after eight days.
