Strand police confirmed responding to the incident at 15:17 and that the deceased was identified by a swim shorts matching the description of one worn by Yeko who was reported missing by his family. According to a police spokesperson, the teen allegedly went missing during a family outing to the beach on Saturday. “When the family packed up on Saturday night, they discovered he was nowhere to be found,” said the spokesperson. “They reported him missing at the Strand Police Station around 08:00 on Sunday.”
The spokesperson added that the formal identification of the deceased took place on Tuesday.
Meiklejohn further expressed their condolences to the family of the deceased.
- In a separate incident on Friday 14 January, four local men were rescued after their 4 m rigid inflatable hull craft suffered engine failure off-shore of Macassar. According to Meiklejohn they were swept towards Seal Island where NSRI duty crew on sea rescue craft located them; they were towed safely to Gordon’s Bay harbour without incident.
- GB Med Rescue paramedics alongside the City’s Fire and Rescue Services also responded to a near-drowning in the vicinity of Spur in Gordon’s Bay this past Saturday (22 January). Spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said the City’s Fire and Rescue Services was alerted to the incident at 15:01. “Strand’s fire crew was dispatched to the scene. Officers confirmed that a 29-year-old woman was transported to a nearby hospital by the ambulance service. The scene was cleared at 15:45,” said Carelse.
