GORDON’S BAY – Four people questioned in connection with the Gordon’s Bay Mall shooting which claimed three lives have been released from police custody.
Captain FC van Wyk, police spokesperson, confirmed that the four were released after 48 hours in accordance with legislation stipulating how long persons of interest can be held for questioning.
Van Wyk clarified that the four were brought in for questioning during the early morning hours of Wednesday 28 January, contrary to earlier reports that they had been arrested.
The shooting occurred on Tuesday evening (27 January) at 20:20 when unknown gunmen allegedly entered the Gordon’s Bay Mall parking area in a vehicle. They approached a stationary Toyota Corolla with three occupants, opened fire, and fled the scene.
Two of the victims succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained whilst inside the vehicle, whilst a third was found fatally wounded outside. The men, aged between 40 and 45, have been identified and are believed to be affiliated with a well-known gang on the Cape Flats.

When the DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette arrived at the scene at approximately 21:00, police and emergency services had cordoned off the area. One of the deceased was lying at a distance from the parked car with a gunshot wound to his back clearly visible, whilst the driver’s-side window of the vehicle where the two other victims were found was shattered.
The scene drew crowds from the surrounding community as residents gathered in shock and disbelief.
Police are investigating a triple murder. The investigation is ongoing.
