A firearm with ammunition and drugs was seized and a suspect arrested by police officers attached to the Anti-Gang Unit deployed to neutralise and disrupt gang activities in Strand. The members responded to a tip-off and pounced on an address in Fern Street on Saturday 8 June. On their arrival they restrained the occupants and searched the entire premises and confiscated a silver Norinco 9 mm firearm with 36 live 9 mm rounds and a magazine and 92 packets of tik. The officers arrested an adult male on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition and possession of drugs. Once charged, the suspect is expected to appear in the Strand Magistrates’ Court.

Vital information provided by members of the community attributed to the arrests of a suspected gang member who was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition, unlawfully, on Tuesday 4 June in Somerset West. “Police members attached to Somerset West Crime Prevention unit were busy with crime intelligence gathering, following a robbery which occurred in Dirkie Uys Street earlier the day. They located the suspect after visiting various addresses, who pointed out the location of the stolen firearm and ammunition. They detained the 32-year-old man on a charge of the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition,” reads a statement from provincial police. The suspect was expected to appear before the Somerset West Magistrates’ courts on the mentioned charges.
