A Strand police officer dispatched to intervene in an alleged violent incident almost became a victim himself when a panga-wielding man allegedly targeted him for attack.
Constable Richard Samery, the near-victim, was accompanied by Sergeant Kaylen Uys to the scene of an apparent stabbing at a residential address in Gustrouw on Saturday (3 December).
On their arrival at the Ebrahim Bazier Crescent address around 15:45, the suspect allegedly came out swinging the panga at Samery.
Before he could strike, the officer duo managed to restrain him.
The officers then stripped him of the weapon before arresting him.
The 22-year-old appeared in Strand Magistrates’ Court on Monday (5 December).
He appeared on charges of possession of a dangerous weapon and an attempted attack on a police officer.
