Two separate arrests, of a man and a woman, were made for illegal possession of firearms in the Lwandle policing precint at the weekend.

On Saturday (19 November), at 16:30, Lwandle police arrested a man who was apparently in illegal possession of a firearm. The following day (Sunday 20 November) Strand police arrested a 24-year-old woman for allegedly also being in illegal possession of a firearm.

Sergeant Mthokozisi Gama, spokesperson for Lwandle police, said officers were on crime prevention duty on Saturday when they spotted a man who had something on him that looked suspiciously like a revolver.

“The police officers immediately approached him and indicated they wanted to search him, which they did,” he said.

“During the search, the officers found a revolver with no ammunition. Police confiscated the firearm after the suspect failed to produce a licence for the weapon.”

An illegal possession of a firearm case was opened and the 34-year-old man made his first appearance in the Strand Magistrates’ Court on Monday (21 November).

The woman, who was arrested on Sunday at 12:30, made her first appearance at Strand Magistrates’ Court on Monday as well.

Gama said police are taking on the fight to track down illegal firearms being used to commit crimes in the affected areas.

“Our efforts have been bearing good fruit,” he concluded.
