A sinkhole that formed along Joubert Street in Lochnerhof, Strand two weeks ago was yet to be repaired by the City, and meanwhile posed a risk to pedestrians and motorists, according to residents.
“We’ve barricaded the road with buckets and barrier tape ourselves,” one resident who asked not to be named said. “To our knowledge the City is yet to come here.” Residents also took to social media to bemoan the somewhat delayed response by the City.
Asked if there was a permanent solution to all the sinkholes that regularly occur in the vicinity, he stated a consultant had been appointed for the design and construction monitoring of the Gordon’s Bay Regional Sewer Pump Station and rising main that will accommodate the diversion. Badroodien said the service provider had finalised a preliminary design, a more detailed one to be completed by July 2022. Commencement of the procurement process is planned for March 2023.
“Once the diversion of the flow is in place and some of the flow within the Trappies Outfall sewer is reduced it will allow for the City’s Reticulation to upgrade the Trappies Outfall sewer. In the interim Reticulation will have to implement point repairs for any pipe collapses on the Trappies Outfall sewer.”
