All the necessary approvals and permissions have been obtained for the construction of a prayer facility for the Gordon’s Bay Islamic Society (GBIS).

Once completed, the mosque will be known as the Gordon’s Bay Jummah Masjid. Construction is expected to start early September, with an envisioned completion date within 24 months, said GBIS chairperson Cassim Peer.

On a visit to the site this week, he pointed at a container placed on the property, which will be used in the interim for the five daily prayers of the GBIS community, starting tomorrow (Friday 18 March).

“Our current facility is really not adequate, which is also the reason we decided to build a mosque in Gordon’s Bay. We expect between 50 to 70 people to attend the Friday prayers, with fewer numbers expected for other prayers.”

Peer stressed all regulations and permissions will be abided to, included that of traffic control. The property is situated on the corner of Lancaster Road and Riverside Avenue.

“This is a communal initiative, so we are entirely dependent on funds from donors for the construction of the mosque. Building will progress as funds become available,” Peer said.

The total cost of the mosque is estimated at R35 million. Once completed, it will include a women’s section as well as an education centre.

A fence will also be erected around the property and security systems put in place in the coming weeks.

Peer added the GBIS has received support from the local community and neighbours, and will continue to address any concerns. “We hope this development will add value to our area and ensure harmony in the community. We look forward to interacting with everyone, so come and talk to us. Everyone is welcome and we are always available for any questions.”

Masjidul Aneeqah is situated adjacent to Greenways Golf Estate in Gordon’s Bay Road and is nearing its completion. Thie building of the facility is also dependent on sponsorship, with most of the construction complted, aside from laying the parking area and other final touches.

Chairperson of the mosque Boeta Ali Hendricks said Friday prayers at the mosque have already started, and the five daily prayers will commence on the official launch day, coinciding with the start of Ramadan at the start of April.

“On opening day, we will host a programme to thank our sponsors and read an opening prayer. The mosque can accommodate up to 250 people and has an additional prayer space for women upstairs.”
