Locals were offered the opportunity to shave or spray in solidarity to those facing a cancer diagnosis or affected by the life-threatening disease at the Shave/spray-a-thon hosted by the Pink Ladies (pictured) at Mediclinic Vergelegen in Somerset West on Friday (4 October). Many brave participants were supported as they either chopped their manes off, shaved their heads, coloured their hair or sacrificed a bail-out fee in donation to the worthy cause. The hospital benefits from an active Occupational Health team, with Sr Darize Steyn, who has been with the team for 19 years, driving health education and forming the Pink Ladies. This group, consisting of cancer survivors and supporters, organises annual events to raise funds for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) and promote cancer awareness, raising more than R10 000 this year with a focus on breast cancer awareness in October.
