This past Saturday (15 June), despite the windy conditions, locals gathered to witness the unveiling of the final conservation message on the mural at the public restrooms near the Strand Surf Lifesaving Club on Strand Beach. The event marked the much-awaited reveal of a digitally-printed sign, recently added to the collection of vibrant, painted messages promoting environmental awareness. Designed by Holy Cow Design and printed by Tinroof Studio, this new addition completes the wall project that began earlier this year (“Freddy’s memory etched in colour,” DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette, 17 January). “Thank you so, so much

Lisa Starr, founder of Hoam, proudly unveiled the sign urging beachgoers not to litter, encouraging them to either take their trash home or use the provided bins. Starr expressed deep gratitude to Anton Van den Eijkel Painters and Renovations for preparing the wall, and to Holy Cow Design, Tinroof Studio, and Mega Paint and Hardware for offering paint at a discounted rate. She also acknowledged the Helderberg Sunrise Rotary Club for their sponsorships and financial support. Special thanks were extended to artists Marileze van der Berg, Francoise Joubert, Maryann Joseph, and Elsie Vermeulen Jooste, the creative force behind the Freddie mural, for their invaluable contributions. Additionally, Starr thanked Surface Safe Natural Stone Floor Treatments for sponsoring the sealer that protects the artwork and for providing anti-slip treatments for the bathrooms.

Young participants Mia Els, Marie Mauduit, Hunter van Staden and Ella Parkin were featured in special segments of the programme to celebrate the occasion. They delivered a poetry recitation and joined in singing with the audience, who spontaneously erupted into a rendition of “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley.

Sonja Peacey welcomed everyone present, sharing insight into the project, which saw Hoam and Helderberg Sunrise Rotary Club unite to transform the once “unsightly, bland wall” at Strand Beach into a beacon of creativity, education and a kaleidoscope of colour”. “Through skilful brush strokes and innovative techniques the wall has evolved into a visual narrative, capturing the essence of environmental stewardship and societal awareness,” she said. “As passersby pause to admire the images they are not only treated to a feast for the eyes, but are also engaged in a dialogue about pressing issues facing their community and the planet at large. This awareness piece stands as a testament to the ability of art to transcend boundaries, provoke thought and ignite change.”Photo: AV Photography
