Macassar Rugby Club emerged victorious in a Super League B encounter, overcoming a formidable Goodwood team and a second-half numerical disadvantage to claim a well-deserved 39-27 win on Saturday (12 July).

The match, played at Riverside Park, started evenly matched, Goodwood leveraging their powerful forward pack to launch several phases of attack. But Macassar’s resolute defense stood firm, absorbing the pressure and denying their opponents any early breakthroughs.

As the game progressed, the home team’s backline asserted dominance, as star back Jaden Pieterse delivered an outstanding performance that saw him cross the whitewash for a brace of tries.

Leading from the front, Jovan Cookson put in a captain’s performance, showcasing his seasoned skills and supported upfront by the tireless efforts of Franklin Gaobone and Eduardo Titus, who relentlessly tackled opponents and disrupted Goodwood’s rhythm.

The second half saw the MC Boys truly control of the game. The impact of their bench was immediate and positive, with Anwar Benjamin, Samuel Boer and Hewson Petersen all making significant contributions. The experienced presence of veteran Gurston Cupido also proved invaluable, adding calm and strategic depth to the squad.

The home team’s backline continued to be a relentless force, ultimately proving too much for their opponents as they carved out several more excellent tries.

The MC Boys were forced to play most of the second half with only 14 men after Mark Davids received a red card.

In Super League A, due to injuries to key players, Helderberg was not at their best in their match against Villager at Charles Morkel. In five previous encounters between the two clubs, Berge were victorious, but this time Villager claimed the spoils by 22-39.

The visitors already had the lead in the fifth minute (0-5). After a good break by inside centre Quinn Visser, strong hooker Mauritz Swart scored in the 10th minute (5-5).

In the 13th minute, Villager took the lead with a wing try and then led for the rest of the match (5-10).

In the 28th minute, another unconverted try followed (5-15). In the 32nd minute, Berge’s hardworking eighthman Dean Coen narrowed the lead (10-15).

Just before half-time, Villager scored their bonus-point try, which was also converted. (10-22).

With the restart, it was a repeat, with another converted try for the visitors. This was followed by a penalty and another converted try (10-39).

In the dying moments of the match, Berge made a very late comeback attempt to give the score some respectability, with a well-placed corner try by right wing Lynn-Jay Hendricks, in his 50th league match, followed by another by replacement flank Dries Engelbrecht with a powerful run from the halfway line. Michael Visser’s conversion made the final score 22-39.
