“The best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.” This quote by Andy Rooney rings true for the children at The Smart Hub in Macassar, who recently enjoyed the wisdom and storytelling from a few special Helderberg Society for the Aged (HSFA) residents. The representatives, Ellen Marie, Louise Roddick and Adele Labuschagne from the HSFA’s ever-growing projects team, delivered bags filled with beautifully knitted blankets, jerseys, beanies and teddies, all lovingly crafted by HSFA residents, to the school. Marie told an animated version of Little Red Riding Hood, which had all the children hanging on to every word. A word of thanks was expressed to Dr Bryony May and her volunteers at the NPO Out the Box for creating a wonderful educational centre for the children, known as the Little Smarties, achieving a remarkable transformation in just two years. The residents from HSFA Projects recently had the pleasure of attending a presentation by May on the various programmes being implemented by the NPO and were inspired to get involved and contribute their skills.

A special thanks goes to the wonderful residents at HSFA Mountview Frail Care, Joan Moen and Edith Hofmeyr, for their incredible dedication and generosity. Over the past few months, Moen and Hofmeyr have been tirelessly knitting beautiful crafts, which they have now graciously donated to Heartlands Baby Sanctuary. This heart-warming effort bridges the gap between generations, showcasing the kindness and creativity of elderly community members, and bringing joy to little ones at the temporary residential safe-care facility for children.
