In a remarkable display of community spirit and teamwork, a group of environmentally conscious neighbours, driven by a shared passion for nature, have taken significant steps to enhance the local ecosystem.
This collaborative effort aims to rejuvenate the area’s natural surroundings, which have suffered due to beetle infestations and recent storm damage in Somerset West.
Representatives of the Heart of the Helderberg initiative founded by neighbouring estates Vergelegen, Lourensford, and Erinvale have spearheaded the project to plant a new avenue of trees along Lourensford Road. This green corridor extends from the circle at the skateboard park opposite the fuel station to the croquet club. Under the guidance of horticultural pioneers, Richard Arm, the gardens manager at Vergelegen Wine Estate, and Casper Geldenhuys, the horticultural manager at Lourensford Wine Estate, community teams championed the tree-planting project last Tuesday (11 June).
Enthusiastic participation
Their efforts resulted in the planting of 216 indigenous trees, chosen for their resistance to the invasive Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer beetle.
The trees, primarily sourced from Lourensford and supplemented by donations from around Somerset West, cover an area of approximately 600 m.
Arm expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the effort, noting the enthusiastic participation of the team and the overwhelming support from the local community.
“We exceeded what we thought we could do,” he pointed out. “The teams loved working together and the waves of encouragement from the community was amazing.”
The planning for this greening project had been underway for several months, with the goal of selecting robust plant species capable of thriving in the local environment.
Symbol of commitment
“We aimed to plant the trees during May/June to ensure they benefit from winter watering before the summer heat,” Arm explained.
He also highlighted the efficient support from Alderman Stuart Pringle and the City of Cape Town’s recreation and parks department, which expedited the necessary approvals for the initiative that not only aims to restore the area’s former verdant beauty but also serves as a symbol of commitment to environmental preservation and community involvement.
Arm emphasised the ongoing nature of their efforts: “We replace every tree we lose to age, storms, or disease with at least three more. This continuous cycle of planting will start yielding benefits almost immediately.”
As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, Vergelegen has pledged to plant over 1 000 trees on and around the estate, contributing to a greener future for Helderbergers.
