Fourteen-year-old Chulu Menzeya from Asanda Village was the player to beat in the Subway Surfer gaming challenge on Friday. The teen improved his high score in the game, which requires great focus, at least four times on the day in hopes of bagging a R1 000 mall voucher.
Chulu Menzeya (righter) was accompanied by his 15-year-old friend, Siphelele Hoboyi who shares in his passion for gaming.
Keen gamer Zeah Skippers from Eerste River made her way to Somerset Mall, where the dynamic gaming environment was enjoyed by many.
Caleb Ulster also proved to be quite the competitor in Beat Saber, a VR rhythm game where one slashes the beats of adrenaline-pumping music as they fly towards you, surrounded by a futuristic world. Beat Saber is played on Battle+, MTN’s e-sport platform, where gamers can watch exclusive videos and play tournaments or compete in challenges to earn rewards.
Caleb Ulster kicked dust in the eyes of his competitor, Amber Liversey, in a shortened version of the Redragon Keyboard Rebuild Race. In a test proving just how quick the competitors’ fingers are, Caleb secured the most number of keys to the keyboard in the allotted time of three minutes.
Among media guests were Helderberg 93.6FM’s Megan Prinsloo, Lunga Smile and Cleopatra Kadzunge.
Zoë Human (Cape Town TV presenter), Brad Kirby (MTN senior specialist gaming) and Christie Stanbridge (Hyprop brand and campaigns marketing manager) shared in all the gaming fun on Friday. Stanbridge remarked: “The goal of our national gaming tournament is to create a vehicle for making e-sports accessible to everyone, breaking down barriers and removing the stigma that gaming is only for a certain age group. We aim to ensure that people from all walks of life can come together to play games and participate in the thrilling world of e-sports.”
