Hospice Week, marked from Sunday 5 to Saturday 11 May this year, brought much-needed awareness of palliative care and hospice services.
Helderberg Hospice commemorated the special week, which serves as a tribute to the unwavering dedication of palliative care providers and medical professionals and culminated in International Nurse’s Day this past Sunday (12 May), with a fabulous high tea in Macassar on Sunday 5 May.
The Zandvliet High School Hall was decorated beautifully, with draping in soft autumn colours that perfectly reflected the “Vintage” theme for the day. Each table was exquisitely decorated and laden with delectable high-tea eats. Sr Kitty Jordaan, a home-care registered nurse from Helderberg Hospice, addressed those attending and explained the important work that hospice does in caring for people with life-limiting illnesses. From support and advice to those newly diagnosed to pain and symptom control, support of family and loved ones, end of life care and grief and bereavement counselling, Helderberg Hospice is there for the community when it matters most.
Master of ceremonies Harold van der Merwe looked very dapper in a top hat and silver suspenders, musicians Zahier Abrahams and Liam van der Heyde treated attendees to some beautiful tunes, and Ashlyn Prinsloo wowed the crowd with her truly impressive belly-dancing skills. The afternoon ended with bingo and the drawing of raffle prizes. Helderberg Hospice is very grateful to all who participated and donated their time to make the event such a success.
